Steampunk PC, Oh So Retro!

Did you notice the sudden retro wave that’s hit most ID designers? It’s like they’ve gone nostalgic and strung an emotional cord with gadgets from the past. The Philco PC here is a prime example of such inspirations, totally reminiscent of the 1954 design classic Philco Predicta! Indulge in it for the aesthetic value, as for the specs…yea it does host Windows 7. But then again we’re here for the love of design, specs can take a hike for the moment!

Gobelins: “Un tour de Manège (Merry Go Round)”

Watching Un tour de Manège (Merry Go Round) is like flipping through the pastel drawings of a child—but coming away with clean fingers. Directed by Nicolas Anthanè, Brice Chevillard, Alexis Liddell, Francoise Losito, and Mai Nguyen, this latest Gobelins short is an impressionistic tale of being lost and found, as experienced through a child’s eyes. Saying so much by doing so little, Un tour de Manège gets it right. It’s tactile: full of tonal and shading effects, chalky, and sprinkled in baby-powder. It’s innocent: tapping into the existential dramas of childhood, and like many works from the Gobelins school, crystallizing emotions like fear and loneliness in graphical simplicity. These moments are brief, but define a coming of age for the character, and help to humanize the inherent flaw by providing an escape from reality. Liberation by imagination. The narrative is simple, buttressed by the fundamentals of good storytelling, and follows the same three-act structure documented at the turn of the 19th century. Much is left unexplained. The audience is left to fill in the blanks, without papering over the poetic nuance.

Out on DVD: Rob Machado in The Drifter

In the summer of 2008, iconic surfer and former Pipe Master, Rob Machado, flew to Indonesia to experience a different kind of surf trip. The journey ultimately took him way beyond his comfort zone, where he was finally alone with his thoughts, desires and the empty perfection of an unnamed Indian Ocean reef. What he discovered was beautifully captured in this autobiographical film.

Pike Loop

Tomorrow starts the construction of the architectural installion “Pike Loop” at the Storefront of Art and Architecture (New York), together with the opening of the exhibition of the work of Swiss architects Gramazio & Kohler on Architecture and Digital Fabrication. Gramazio & Kohler shipped R-O-B, their Mobile Fabrication Unit robot, to New York to build Pike Loop, a 22m long structure built from bricks.
I would really like to see these kind of fabrication techniques to be used more often, they definitely offer new possibilities to architecture and design.

This is a photo of another design called “Structural Oscillations”, it should give you an idea how Pike Loop could look like when it’s finished.
